Inherited from the Mediaeval Byzantine Greek ἀνταμείβω, from the mediopassive verb of Ancient Greek ἀνταμείβομαι (antameíbomai, “give back in exchange”). Morphologically, from αντ- (αντι-) (“counter”) +‎ αμείβω (“pay, compensate”). Also, stem αμοιβ- by vowel gradation.
