Usage notes

In Modern Greek, the hyphen is used: [1]

  1. To separate syllables at hyphenation.
  2. For the preceding words —προτακτικό (protaktikó)— before names (proper nouns): αϊ- (aï-), αγια- (agia-), αγιο- (agio-), γερο- (gero-), γρια- (gria-), θεια- (theia-), κυρα- (kyra-), μαστρο- (mastro-), μπαρμπα- (barmpa-), παπα- (papa-), χατζη- (chatzi-)
    There is no hyphen for κυρ (kyr), καπετάν (kapetán), πάτερ (páter).
  3. To express a morphological analysis, e.g. ωτο-ρινο-λαρυγγο-λόγος for ωτορινολαρυγγολόγος (otorinolaryngológos). Similarly, for names of chemical compounds.
  4. To express "from-to" for space or periods.
    Το τρένο κάνει διαδρομή Αθήνα-Θεσσαλονίκη. ― To tréno kánei diadromí Athína-Thessaloníki. ― The train is for the rout Athens-Salonica.
    ιστορική περίοδος 1700-1800. ― istorikí períodos 1700-1800. ― historic period 1700-1800.
  5. For double names or surnames.
  6. Spuriously, but frequently for polylectic, multi-word terms e.g. πόλη-κράτος for πόλη κράτος (póli krátos, “city-sate”).
  • A hyphen is not used for repetitions e.g. intensifying repetitions like ίσα ίσα (ísa ísa).
  • A hyphen is not retained when transcribing foreign loanwords with hyphens.
