καδύτας

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • κασύτας (kasútas)

Etymology

From Aramaic, represented by Jewish Babylonian Aramaic כְּשׁוּתָא‎ (kəšūṯā, “dodder”), Classical Syriac ܟܫܽܘܬܳܐ‎ (kəšūṯā, “dodder”), Arabic كُشُوث‎ (kušūṯ, “dodder”). See these entries for their possible origin. According to de Lagarde καδύτας is completely unreal as a transcription error, that however Pliny already had in his manuscript of Theophrast, and only κασύτας (kasútas) has been spoken.
