Etymology

From Classical Mongolian ᠥᠩᠭᠡ (öŋge), from Middle Mongol ᠥᠩᠭᠡ (öŋge), from Proto-Mongolic *öŋ-ge, from Proto-Turkic *öŋ. Within the Mongolic family, cognate with Buryat үнгэ (ünge), Kalmyk өңг (öñg), Daur unggw (“color, facial expression”), Dongxiang ungie (“face, countenance, color”), etc. For Turkic cognates, compare also Old Uyghur [script needed] (öŋ, “color”), Kazakh өң (öñ, “face, shape, color”), Yakut өҥ (öñ, “color”).

The lust sense is derived after Chinese 色 (sè).
