թաւալ

Old Armenian

Etymology

The origin is unknown.[1]

Often connected with Old Armenian տապալեմ (tapalem), which has certainly influenced Middle Armenian թապալ (tʿapal), and with Romanian tăvăli (to roll). Has also been compared to Central Kurdish تاوێر (tawêr, boulder);[2] for the sense development compare Central Kurdish تاوێرکِردِنەوە (tawêrkirdinewe, to roll)[3] and Old Armenian գիլ (gil).

Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *tap- (to press down, press together), and cognate with Ancient Greek ταπεινός (tapeinós, low), Old Norse þefja (to stir, thicken), þófi (felt).[4][5]
