Etymology
According to Petersson the root is *կիք- (*kikʿ-), from Proto-Indo-European *giswo- (compare Russian dialectal жи́хать (žíxatʹ, “to bend, to give way, to yield to, to sway”), жихля́ть (žixljátʹ, “to cause to stagger”)), grown by the suffix *-sw- from the root *gey- (“to turn, to bend”). This is accepted by Pokorny with a question mark but rejected by Ačaṙyan who leaves the origin open.
Based on the dialectal forms կիք (kikʿ, “firm, close”) and կուք (kukʿ, “compact, huddled, firm, close”) J̌ahukyan assumes that we are dealing with a contamination of two roots, *կիք- (*kikʿ-) and *կուք- (*kukʿ-), respectively from the Proto-Indo-European roots *gey- (“to turn, to bend”) and *gew- (“to bend, to curve”) grown with the augment *-k-. According to him, dialectal կուչ (kučʿ) is probably related to *կուք- (*kukʿ-).
