Etymology
From Aramaic / Classical Syriac ܫܦܐ (šəp̄ā, “to rub down or grind against”), from the root שׁ־ו־ף / ܫ-ܘ-ܦ (š-w-p) related to rubbing, whence also Classical Syriac ܫܘܦܐ (šawpā), absolute state ܫܘܦ (šōp̄, “friction, rubbing”). Related to շփշփեմ (špʿšpʿem) and շօշափեմ (šōšapʿem).
