العزى

Arabic

Etymology

Literally "the most powerful one", the definite feminine elative form of عَزِيز (ʿazīz), from the root ع ز ز (ʿ-z-z).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /al.ʕuz.zaː/

Proper noun

اَلْعُزَّى (al-ʿuzzā) f

  1. (Arabian mythology) Al-Uzza, a pre-Islamic Arabian goddess
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 53:19-20:
      أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ اللَّاتَ وَٱلْعُزَّى وَمَنَاةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَى
      ʾafaraʾaytumu l-lāta wal-ʿuzzā wamanāta ṯ-ṯāliṯata l-ʾuḵrā
So have you considered al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā? And Manāt, the third - the other one?
