From Classical Syriac ܕܕܪܐ‎ (daddārā, “elm, oak”), from Middle Persian 𐫅𐫀𐫡‎ (dʾr /dār/, “tree, gallows; wood”), from Proto-Iranian *dā́ru (“tree”); cognate with Persian دردار‎ (dardâr, “elm”).
