Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /zar.d͡ʒuːn/

Etymology 2

Identical to Jewish Palestinian Aramaic זרגונה‎ (zargōnā), Jewish Babylonian Aramaic זרגונא‎ (zargōnā), Classical Syriac ܙܪܓܘܢܐ‎ (zargōnā), Hebrew זרגון‎ (zargōn), also meaning vine shoots, which could be considered to contain the Northwest Semitic diminutive suffix -ōna, comparing Hebrew זרדים‎ (“young sprouts, shoots; hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna); whitethorn (Crataegus azarolus) and its shoots”) and زَعْرُور‎ (zaʕrūr, “thorn-apple (Crataegus)”), but the term most likely passed via Aramaic from Middle Persian [script needed] (zargōn, literally “gold-coloured”) whence Persian زرگون‎ (zargôn, “gold-coloured”), a doublet of which is also present in مَازَرْيُون‎ (māzaryūn, “spurge-olive (Daphne mezereum)”).
