Etymology
Borrowed from Classical Persian عورت ('aorat), from Arabic عَوْرَة (ʕawra, “genitals; nudity”), where the shift to “woman” is due to the doctrine of some Islamic schools that the whole female body is a form of “nudity” that must be covered in public. First attested as Old Hindi عورت (‘aurat).
