Inherited from Prakrit 𑀓𑀬𑀮 (kayala) / कय़ल / ಕಯ಼ಲ (kaẏala), 𑀓𑁂𑀮 / केल / ಕೇಲ (kela) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-) (compare Old Marathi 𑘎𑘹𑘯𑘲 f (keḷī, “plantain tree”)), from Sanskrit कदल (kadala).
