Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘢𑘳𑘚𑘲 (puḍī), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀧𑀼𑀟𑀺𑀬𑀸 (puḍiyā) (with Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-)), from Sanskrit पुटी (puṭī), पुटिका (puṭikā). Compare Gujarati પડી (paḍī), Hindustani پُڑِیَا / पुड़िया (puṛiyā), Punjabi ਪੁੜੀ (puṛī) / پُڑِی (puṛī).
