From Old Khmer thnal, tnal, tnall, tnol, thnol (“access, especially causeway, inlet, or road over an embankment”). Cognate with Modern Khmer ថ្នល់ (thnɑl).

ถนน • (tà-nǒn) (classifier สาย or เส้น)

1. access, as course, passage, path, road, route, street, way, etc.
   • 1 Chronicles 26:18, KJV:

     สี่คนที่ถนนและสองคนที่ระเบียง

     sìi kon tîi tà-nǒn lɛ́ sɔ̌ɔng kon tîi rá-biiang

     Four at the causeway, and two at Parbar.

   • Isaiah 15:3, KJV:

     ทุกคนจะร่ำไห้เป็นนักหนาที่บนหลังคาเรือนและตามถนน

     túk kon jà râm-hâi bpen nák-nǎa tîi bon lǎng-kaa rʉʉan lɛ́ dtaam tà-nǒn

     On the tops of their houses, and in their streets, every one shall howl, weeping abundantly.

     ณ ที่สูงที่ข้างทางที่กลางถนน เธอก็ยืนอยู่
