From Sanskrit प्रधान (pradhāna, “leading; presiding; etc”); possibly via Old Khmer pradhāna, pradāna, prathṭhāna, braḥ dhāna, braḥ dhāṇa, braḥ thāna (“chief, lord, master, leader; man of distinction, personage of note; supreme, most important; etc”). Cognate with Lao ປະທານ (pa thān), Modern Khmer ប្រធាន (prɑthiən).
