From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pakᴰˢ² (to insert; to plant a stake). Cognate with Lao ປັກ (pak), Tai Dam ꪜꪰꪀ, Shan ပၵ်း (pák), Phake ပက် (pak), Ahom 𑜆𑜀𑜫 (pak), Zuojiang Zhuang baek.
