Etymology
Of uncertain origin. Possibly from contraction or corruption of แม่อยู่หัว (mɛ̂ɛ-yùu-hǔua, literally “lady above heads”) + เมือง (mʉʉang, literally “city, town; nation”); literally "lady above all heads in the nation".
