Etymology

Said to derive from 八百長(やおちょう) (Yaochō), the nickname of a 八百屋(やおや) (yaoya, “green grocer”) named 長兵衛(ちょうべえ) (Chōbē) who was suspected of intentionally losing go games according to folk etymology.
