Etymology

Compound of 粉骨 (funkotsu, “bone-breaking exertion”, literally “powdering the bones”) + 砕身 (saishin, “breaking the body”, with overtones of working at something so devotedly that one breaks one's body).[1] Compare Chinese 粉身碎骨 (fěn shēn suì gǔ) and 粉骨碎身 (fěn gǔ suì shēn).
