대한민국

Korean

Etymology

Sino-Korean word from 大韓民國, which is based on 大韓帝國 (“The Empire of Korea”). According to 1946 Joseon Sangsik Mundap of Choe Nam-seon, 大 (大, “grand”) is used before 韓 (韓, “Korea”) to distinguish it from the traditional smaller Hans (三韓 (“Samhan”)). The use of 大 (大, “grand”) in a name of empire is a Chinese tradition (ex. 大日本帝國, 大英帝國)
