From Middle Korean 뎝시 (Yale: tyepsi). Possibly from Ottoman Turkish تپسی (tepsi, “tray”), ultimately from Middle Chinese 疊子 (MC dep̚ t͡sɨX, “small dish; plate”). Cognate with Sino-Korean 접자 (楪子, jeopja).
