Proto-Finnic

    Etymology

From Proto-Finno-Permic *pošja, akin to Proto-Samic *poaššō. The word could further be borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *(H)posčaH (later *pasčā). In the past, several proposals for Germanic loan origin have been advanced, including derivation from Proto-Germanic *bansijaz (“haystack”), but a Germanic origin is now considered unlikely.[1]
