Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *knibʰ-néh₂-ti, an iterative verb from Proto-Indo-European *kneybʰ- (“to pinch, to squeeze”) which also gave rise to the strong verb *hnīpaną[2]. Compare Lithuanian kniẽbti and Latvian kniêbt (“to pinch”).
