From Proto-Indo-European *lēwt-, *lēwdʰ- (“song, sound”), from Proto-Indo-European *lēw- (“to sound, resound, sing out”). Cognate with Irish laoidh (“song, poem”), Latin laus (“thanksgiving, praise”).
