Early borrowing from East Austroasiatic, whence Proto-Mon-Khmer *kpaas. Compare Sanskrit कर्पास (karpāsa) and Old Chinese 布 (OC *pˤa-s) (B-S), both of which are probably Austroasiatic loans.
