Etymology

From *těskъ (“pressing”) +‎ *-nъ with loss of *-k- between *s and *n (compare Proto-Slavic *ěsnъ (“clear”)). Probably from Proto-Indo-European *teh₂y- (“to dunk, to knead”), akin to Proto-Slavic *tajati (“to melt, to precipitate”).
