Etymology
From Arabic بِناء (bināʔ). The final -i either by influence of binja or as a relict of word-final imala, for whose existence in older Maltese there is good evidence (it may have been lost through influence of the Romance feminine -a); compare also biki from Arabic بُكاء (bukāʔ).
