Uncertain. Possibly from Latin boreās (“northern wind”) (compare Italian borea, Dalmatian and Venetian bura, also Catalan boira and Albanian borë) or alternatively Slavic bura (Proto-Slavic *bur'a; compare Serbo-Croatian bura, Bulgarian буря (burja), Macedonian бура (bura)).
