From Proto-Albanian *dera or *derna, from Proto-Indo-European *dr̥-néH-ti, from *der- (“to tear, split”). Compare Ancient Greek δέρω (dérō, “to skin”), Sanskrit दृणाति (dṛṇāti, “to busrt, to tear”) and Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍄𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌰𐌽 (gatairan, “to tear”).[1]

From Proto-Albanian *dersa, from Proto-Indo-European *ĝhersos, from *ǵʰers-. Compare Ancient Greek χέρσος (khérsos, “dry land”).[2] Alternatively from earlier *ndjerr, Proto-Albanian *ən-tersa, from Proto-Indo-European *ters- (“to dry (up)”). Compare Latin torreo (“to dry”), Gothic 𐌸𐌰𐌿𐍂𐍃𐌿𐍃 (þaursus), Old High German durri (“arid, dry”).
