Etymology
From Middle High German enge, from Old High German engi. Cognate with German eng, Dutch eng.
The expected form would be eng (because of the final -e in Middle High German). The -k developed first in the uninflected stem by analogy with adjectives such as jonk, and was later generalised to all forms.
