Etymology

From gabë (“blunder”), Proto-Albanian *gaubā, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰeub(ʰ)- (“to bend, move”). Close to Lithuanian gaubiù, gaũbti (“cover, wrap up, curve”), Old Norse goppa (“jump up and down, swing”) and Russian губи́ть (gubítʹ, “to wreck”). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)

Alternatively from Italian gabbare (“I deceive, trick”).[1]
