(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.) It's been considered to originate from Proto-Baltic word ''*glivěti'' (“cover with slime”) or Proto-Germanic word *slīwa (slime). Has same origin as Estonian liiv and Finnish liiva.
