- rotten (obsolete)
Etymology

From northern Middle High German roten, roden and Middle Low German rōden, from Proto-Germanic *rudōną. Cognate with Dutch rooien. Also akin to English rid, Danish rydde.
The variant rotten (still in ausrotten) shows a more southern phonetical development. However, most Upper German dialects used the verb reuten, from Old High German riutan, which is related but not identical with the former.
