From Old Swedish tiæra, from Old Norse tjara, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *terwą. Cognate with Danish tjære, Norwegian tjære, Icelandic tjara, Faroese tjøra, Dutch teer, German Teer and English tar. Also cognate with Finnish terva, Estonian tõrv and Northern Sami darvi.
