List of Rotherham United F.C. seasons
Rotherham United Football Club is an association football club based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The club was formed in 1925 as a merger between Rotherham Town and Rotherham County when it was decided that having two professional clubs in the town was not sustainable.[1] After the merger, the club was elected to play in the Football League Third Division North. United played in the Third Division North until 1950–51, when they were champions of the division and were promoted to the Second Division.[2] During their first spell in the Second Division the club reached the fifth round of the FA Cup twice and were runners up in the inaugural Football League Cup, which is the furthest they have reached in these competitions.[3] Their furthest Football League Trophy run saw the club win the competition twice, in the 1995–96 season defeating Shrewsbury Town 2–1 in the final; and in the 2021–22 season defeating Sutton United 4–2 after extra time in the final.[4]

As of the end of 2022–23, the club's first team has remained in the English Football League since its formation.[3] Their highest finish came in 1954–55 when they finished in third place in the Second Division, missing out on promotion to the top division only on goal average.[1] In total the club has spent 27 seasons in the second tier of the English football league system, 47 in the third and 13 in the fourth. Rotherham has qualified for four Football League play-offs, in 1998–99 they lost in the Third Division semi-final to Leyton Orient,[5] in 2009–10 they reached the League Two final but lost 3–2 to Dagenham & Redbridge,[6] in 2013–14 they reached the League One final and defeated Leyton Orient in a penalty shoot-out to gain promotion the Football League Championship,[7] and in 2017–18 they again reached the League One final and defeated Shrewsbury Town 2–1 to gain promotion the EFL Championship. Notes
- Includes goals scored in league games (including play-offs), FA Cup, EFL Cup and EFL Trophy.
- When the Second World War began, the 1939–40 Football League season was abandoned with three matches played.[8]
- The FA Cup was contested in 1945–46 but the Football League did not resume until the following season.
- The Third Division was renamed Division Two after the FA Premier League broke away from the Football League.[9]
- Lost in the play-off semi-final to Leyton Orient 4–2 in a penalty shootout after each leg ended 0–0.[5]
- Before the 2004–05 season, The Football League re-branded Division One as the Football League Championship. Divisions Two and Three became Leagues One and Two, respectively.
- 10 points deducted for entering administration.[1]
- 17 points deducted for not satisfying the normal conditions of Football League rules for exiting administration.[1]
- Beat Aldershot Town 3–0 on aggregate in the semi-final before losing 3–2 to Dagenham & Redbridge in the 2010 Football League Two play-off final.[10][11]
- Promoted into the Football League Championship via the play-offs, beating Preston North End 4–2 on aggregate in the semi-final and Leyton Orient 4–3 on penalties in the 2014 Football League One play-off final.[12]
- Three points deducted for fielding an ineligible player.[13]
- Promoted into the EFL Championship via the play-offs, beating Scunthorpe United 4–2 on aggregate in the semi-final and Shrewsbury Town 2–1 in the 2018 EFL League One play-off final.
- The 2019–20 season was curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with league positions decided on a points-per-game basis. Rotherham United averaged 1.77 points from 35 games.
