From Ancient Greek ἀπεχθάνομαι (apekhthánomai, I am hated) also with transitive sense since Hellenistic times. From ἀπεχθής (apekhthḗs, hateful) from ἀπ(ό) + ἔχθος n (ékhthos, hatred). Morphologically απ- + εχθ + άνομαι.
