Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *tratati (a/j-conjugation), perhaps *-tati extension of Proto-Slavic *trajati (to last, to endure). Related to Russian тратить (tratitʹ), Serbo-Croatian тратити, Czech tratiti. Further akin to Lithuanian trótinti (to tease, to provoke), Proto-Germanic *þrōþijaną (to execute, to produce) (attested in Gothic).
