Etymology

Via Volga Turki, from Ottoman Turkish, made up of Persian طوطی (parrot) + Ottoman قوش (bird). The second component is identical to (and reestablished as) Bashkir ҡош (qoš, bird).

Compare with Kazakh тоты құс (totı qus), Kyrgyz тоту куш (totu kuş), Azerbaijani tutuquşu, Turkish dudu kuşu (parrot).
