নেওয়া

Bengali

Etymology

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀡𑁂𑀤𑀺 (ṇedi, to lead, take), from Sanskrit नयति (nayati, to guide, lead), from the root नी (, to guide, direct). Within Prakrit, the meaning of "guiding" or "leading" was expanded to mean "taking", as a guide takes someone to a destination, and this secondary meaning was retained in later descendants like Bengali. Doublet of আনা (ana, to bring), নেতা (neta, leader, chief), নীতি (niti, policy, politics, ethics), নায়ক (naẏok, leader, hero), নয়ন (noẏon, eye) and নেত্র (netro, eye).
