Corruption of the name of the local ruler, মোমেন সিং (mōmen siṅ), whose name was a bilingual compound of Arabic مؤمن‎ (“believer”) + Sanskrit सिंह (siṃha, “lion”); equivalent to Bengali মোমেন (mōmen) and সিংহ (siṅho).
