Derived from Sanskrit सः (saḥ), from (sa, 3rd-person singular pronoun) + (i, demonstrative), from Proto-Indo-European * and *h₁i, respectively. Cognate with Sylheti ꠢꠦ (he), Assamese সি (xi), Oriya ସେ (se) and Maithili 𑂮𑂵 (se). Overwhelmingly replaced the synonymous terms তা (ta) and তে (te).
