From Proto-Southwestern Tai *vanᴬ (to slash), from Proto-Tai *walᴬ (to slash). Cognate with Lao ຟັນ (fan), Shan ၽၼ်း (phán) or ၾၼ်း (fán), Ahom 𑜇𑜃𑜫 (phan) or 𑜇𑜞𑜃𑜫 (phran), Saek วั๋น.

From Proto-Southwestern Tai *vanᴬ (tooth), from Proto-Tai *wanᴬ (tooth). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨼᩢ᩠ᨶ (fan), Ahom 𑜇𑜝𑜃𑜫 (phlan), Zhuang faenz, Bouyei fanz.
