Traditionally an ideogrammic compound (會意) : 夫 (“man”) + 見 (“see”). Smith (2011) proposes that the left component is instead the bottom of 癸 (OC *kʷilʔ), making it phonetic – compare the Shizhoupian script form at the entry 癸.
