Usage notes
오글오글 (ogeurogeul) is the yang vowel, or bright vowel, form of 우글우글 (ugeurugeul).
In contemporary Korean, the yang vowels refer to /a/, /ɛ/, and /o/. In Korean ideophones and sensory words, forms with these vowels have a connotation of brightness, smallness, clearness, sharpness, youth, or positiveness.
Etymology 2
A neologism based on 오그라들다 (ogeuradeulda, “to curve inwards”), coined some time after a 2002 Internet meme popularized this previously little-known verb in the new meaning of "to be cringeworthy". The ideophone is attested in Internet forums as the regularly derived verb 오글거리다 (ogeulgeorida) as early as 2004. The fully ideophonic form given here, with reduplication, is common after 2009. The word has since become popularized in the spoken slang of South Korean youth as well.
