Polish

Etymology

From older zubr – an Old East Slavic-influenced form from Proto-Slavic *zǫbrъ ~ *izǫbrъ. Displaced Old Polish ząbr. The current form being żubr and not zubr is a result of hypercorrection due to avoiding mazuration.

  • IPA(key): /ʐubr/
  • (file)
  • Rhymes: -ubr
  • Syllabification: żubr

Noun

żubr m anim

  1. European bison, wisent

Usage notes

This word is never used for American bison, which is referred to as bizon.
