Etymology 1

Inherited from Old Polish żyć, from Proto-Slavic *žìti (stem *živ-; compare Czech žít, Slovak žiť, Old Church Slavonic жити (žiti)), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gīˀwetei, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷíh₃weti, apparently from the adjective *gʷih₃wós (alive), from *gʷeyh₃- (to live). Cognates include Lithuanian gyventi, Sanskrit जीवति (jīvati), Latin vīvō and Ancient Greek ζῶ ().
