From older Venetian anciuga, from Ligurian anciôa. A reborrowing from Medieval Latin *apiuva or *apiua, Classical Latin aphyē from Ancient Greek ἀφύη (aphúē, small fish) of uncertain etymon. The ending -ια (-ia) is from the pronunciation of plural αντζούγες (antzoúges) /anˈdzuʝes/, from singular αντζούγα (antzoúga).[1][2].
