Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek διεγείρω (diegeírō, wake up; raise) from δια- (dia-) and ἐγείρω (egeírō, raise). Synchronically analysable as δι- (δια-) + εγείρω (egeíro, raise).
For psychological and sexual senses, semantic loan from French exciter.[1]
