χρωστώ (chrostó) + -άω (-áo). Inherited from the Mediaeval Byzantine Greek χρωστῶ (2nd person χρωστεῖς (khrōsteîs)). From Hellenistic Koine Greek χρεωστῶ (khreōstô), with avoidance of the hiatus [eo], constructed form of χρεωστέω (khreōstéō).[1]
