инеү

Bashkir

Etymology

The only reliable cognate is Kazakh ену (enw, to enter, go in). Thus, this is a very peculiar regional feature shared by only these two languages.

Generally thought to derive from Proto-Turkic *ēn- (to go down)[1],[2]. However, no adequate explanation has been presented as to how this peculiar semantic transformation ("go down" > "enter") could have taken place, and why only in these two languages but not elsewhere.
